Legend tells...

that Reit im Winkl was once a no-man’s-land, not marked on any map.

Nonetheless, Chiemgau’s most distant hole in the snow had to be owned by someone. So, three lords – Max Josef I of Bavaria, Kaiser Franz of Austria and the archbishop of Salzburg – decided simply to gamble for the Reiterwinkl.
The winner was the Bavarian King, who beat the others with jack of diamonds, or in German, “Schellen-Unter”.
Since then, Reit im Winkl has belonged to Bavaria and proudly displayed the “Schellen-Unter”, which has become part of the Unterwirt coat of arms.
